1.5 Reading: Climate change and the greenhouse effect
· What major climate anomalies and episodic events occurred in 1998? The world disaster events, and warmest year was recorded in 1998 and same year China experienced devastating floods affecting many millions of people.
- What environmental hazards are associated with climate
change and who is most affected? Windstorm,
hurricanes, typhoons, flooding, heatwave, tornados and drought, are
climate change related environmental hazards affecting millions of people
on earth. However, people in Africa
and part of Asia (Bangladesh in low land) are most affected because of their
high vulnerability and low level of adaptation and resilience and
mitigation strategy
- How do volcanic eruptions affect extremes? when a volcano erupts, some gases escaped from the
earth’s interior and are trapped in the magma, but the gases under pressure
can escape and blast. This can result in additional threat to health,
cause flooding and mudslide etc..
- What are adaptation and mitigation? accordingly, the aim of adaptation is to reduce the effect
climate change and mitigation aims to reduce the cause of climate change.
- What is the greenhouse effect? greenhouse effect is the way in which heat is trapped closed
the earth’s surface by the release of excess carbon dioxide and methane
(greenhouse gases) into the atmosphere, which act as a blanket and produce
more heat than requires. This happens due to the ability of Carbon dioxide
to captivates more heat radiation and keeps the earth surface warmer. Greenhouse
is largely produced due to human activities and at the effect impact
largely on human and their livelihood as well as the ecosystem.
- What is the ‘runaway’ greenhouse effect? runaway greenhouse effect is when the planet atmosphere
contains excess CO2 and methane that will prevent heat radiation from
leaving the planet, stopping the planet from cooling and preventing water
on its surface.
